One of the main problems the embalmers faced with Lenin’s Body was the appearance of dark spots on the skin, especially on the face and hands. They managed to solve the problem by the use of a variety of different reagents in between baths. For example, if a patch of wrinkling or discoloration occurred on Lenin’s Body it was treated with an acetic acid diluted with vodka. Hydrogen peroxide could be used to restore the tissues’ original colouring. Damp spots on Lenin’s Body were removed by means of disinfectants like quinine or phenol.

Until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 the continued preservation work on Lenin’s Body was funded by the Russian government. At that point the government discontinued financial support and now private donations support the Lenin’s Body preservation staff.

For thousands of years humans have used embalming methods to preserve dead bodies. But nothing compares with Russia’s 90-year-old experiment to preserve the body of Vladimir Lenin, communist revolutionary and founder of the Soviet Union. Generations of Russian scientists have spent almost a century fine-tuning preservation techniques that have maintained the look, feel and flexibility of Lenin’s Body. This year Russian officials closed the Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square so that scientists could prepare Lenin’s Body for public display again in time for the Soviet leader’s 145th birthday anniversary.

Lenin’s Body Facts

  • Embalmers substitute parts of flesh with plastics and other materials
  • A mild bleach is often used to deal with fungus stains on Lenin’s face
  • The body is covered in glycerol and potassium acetate every 2 years
  • At one time, 200 scientists were working to help preserve Lenin’s body

Vladimir Lenin has been dead these 80 years, but the founder of Soviet communism has never looked better. Just ask his curator.

“He looks quite fine, as good as he did 30 years ago,” said Yuri Denisov-Nikolsky, the Russian doctor who just supervised an extensive makeover of Lenin’s corpse. “He looked terrible when he died, but what you see now is Lenin’s face, not someone else’s.”

Denisov-Nikolsky has been working on Lenin’s Body since 1970, and in a rare interview he pulled back the shroud of secrecy surrounding the body, its original embalming and its periodic makeovers.
