  • American Hustle lost the Oscar to Her Django Unchained The Artist lost the Oscar to Midnight in Paris

Philomena lost the Oscar to 12 Years a Slave Silver Linings Playbook lost the Oscar to Argo Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy lost the Oscar to The Descendants

The individual branches voted at BAFTA in those years for their categories as opposed to the entire membership like it is at the AMPAS and has been at BAFTA these past few years.

Since 2015 BAFTA has predicted 9/13 of both adapted and original screenplay winners. Three of the winners they failed to line up with at the Oscars were films that BAFTA disproportionately favoured (The Favourite, Three Billboards and The Theory of Everything) whilst Lion won in the absence of Moonlight.

    FYC:

“The Good Fight” and “The Other Two” in all categories.

    So what does that mean?

I did not know that! Thanks for clarifying.

Essentially BAFTA used to use a similar voting system to the one the Emmys use now. Not only were the nominations decided by the individual academy branches (only actors voting for acting, only writers voting for writing etc) but so were the wins. That’s not been the case historically with the AMPAS nor is it the case with BAFTA now where the entire academy votes in all categories (you don’t have to be a member of the actor branch to vote for say Troy Kotsur whilst you would have had to have been one a decade ago).

You can actually see that reflected in the difference in how much they’ve matched up in wins from the 2010 to the 2020 ceremonies.

    2010 –

Best Film: The King’s Speech (voted on by the entire academy)
Best Director: David Fincher (voted on by the directors branch)
Best Actor: Colin Firth (voted on by the actors branch)
Best Actress: Natalie Portman (voted on by the actors branch)
Best S. Actor: Geoffrey Rush (voted on by the actors branch)
Best S. Actress: Helena Bonham Carter (voted on by the actors branch)
Best O. Screenplay: The King’s Speech (voted on by the writers branch)
Best A. Screenplay: The Social Network (voted on by the writers branch)

2020 (all voted on by the entire membership) –

    Best Film: Nomadland
    Best Director: Chloe Zhao
    Best Actress: Frances McDormand
    Best Actor: Anthony Hopkins
    Best S. Actress: Yuh-jung Youn
    Best S. Actor: Daniel Kaluuya
Best O. Screenplay: Promising Young Woman
    Best A. Screenplay: The Father

With the previous voting system BAFTA’s acting categories for example were more prone to individual passion picks (like Firth for A Single Man) and films the actors branch overwhelmingly liked (like The King’s Speech) sweeping. Now there isn’t really much difference from how they operate in the final round of voting from the AMPAS’ (aside from of course the fact that now with the jury in place you have some cases where you have a field diverging so much from the final Oscar lineup that there’s no nominee matchup like in best actress this year).

    FYC:

“The Good Fight” and “The Other Two” in all categories.
