The latest outing from Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things, has grabbed a total of seven nods (Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Music and Best Performances for the work of Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe), which is not a surprise given the positive reaction to the English-language film after its Golden Lion win in Venice. But it was widely unexpected to see both Anatomy of a Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest in the awards’ main category (Best Motion Picture – Drama), on top of their presence in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language section. Fresh off its sweeping triumph at the European Film Awards (read the news), Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’or winner is also nominated for Best Screenplay and for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Sandra Hüller’s stunning work, totalling four nods. On the other hand, Jonathan Glazer’s Cannes Grand Prix winner is also nominated in the Best Original Score category for Mica Levi’s chilling sounds.

Another film vying for the statuette in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category that has also managed to pop up in the main categories is Fallen Leaves, the latest work from master Aki Kaurismäki and a Jury Prize winner in Cannes, whose lead actress Alma Pöysti is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The European presence in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language is rounded off by Me Captain, the latest film from Matteo Garrone, for which he won Best Director in Venice, and JA Bayona’s Netflix production Society of the Snow. It is worth noting that all of these films are representing their own countries in the race for the upcoming Oscars, except for the one with the most nominations, Anatomy of a Fall, since France decided to submit Tran Anh Hung’s The Taste of Things [+see also:

instead.

Other European talents are featured in the nominations, such as actors Barry Keoghan for Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn [+see also:

, a US production with British participation which leads the awards’ nominations alongside its competitor since their summer release, Barbie.

As for the series, Netflix’ UK-US production The Crown grabbed four nominations, and Apple TV+’s US-UK title Ted Lasso, three.
