Does “Anatomy of a Fall” have the “write” stuff in the Academy Awards race for Best Original Screenplay? Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts from major media outlets predict that the script written by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari will persevere despite fierce competition from co-nominees “The Holdovers” by David Hemingson, “Maestro” by Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer, “May December” by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik, and “Past Lives” Celine Song.

A leading 11 of these 16 awards pundits are going with the “Anatomy of a Fall” screenplay: Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and Tariq Khan (Gold Derby).

Directed by French filmmaker Triet, “Anatomy of a Fall” stars Sandra Hüller as a woman who is put on trial for the mysterious death of her husband. Its five nominations are for picture, director, actress, original screenplay and film editing. Note that the movie was not submitted by France for inclusion in the Best International Feature Film category, or else it likely would have found itself with six bids this year.

Four of our Experts believe “The Holdovers” script will get an “A” grade at the Oscars: Eric Deggans (NPR), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby). Alexander Payne‘s latest film takes place in the 1970s when a lonely teacher, played by Paul Giamatti, has to watch after several schoolboys over the holidays, with a little help from the lunch lady, aka scene-stealer Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Its five nominations are for picture, actor, supporting actress, original screenplay and film editing.

The remaining Oscarologist, Peter Travers (ABC), goes rogue in predicting a victory for “Past Lives” in this category. Song’s semi-autobiographical movie stars Greta Lee as Nora Moon and Teo Yoo as Hae Sung, a pair of childhood friends who begin to reevaluate their relationship now that they’re adults. Its two nominations are for picture and original screenplay.

Currently at Gold Derby, none of our Experts are predicting wins for the other two Best Original Screenplay nominees, “Maestro” (a biopic about the life of American composer Leonard Bernstein) and “May December” (about an actress who plays a controversial woman who groomed a boy when he was a teen). However, many more awards pundits will soon be chiming in with their Oscar predictions, so that could change in the coming weeks.
