OVERPROTECTIVE

OVERPROTECTIVE

Genre: Satirical Comedy / Ensemble Mockumentary
Tone: Best in Show meets Legally Blonde with Napoleon Dynamite awkwardness and Barbershop banter
Tagline: Raising children should be risky—but not on their watch.

Logline

When a competitive group of overprotective parents go head-to-head in a national “SafeParent Championship”—complete with helmeted toddlers, allergen-free obstacle courses, and emotional support animals—their quest to become “America’s Most Vigilant” is derailed by their own kids staging a joyful rebellion… with glitter, gluten, and actual risk.

Synopsis

Act I: Paranoia in the Playground

Welcome to the fictional town of Chestnut Hill, the “safest suburb in America,” where parenting isn’t a role—it’s a competitive sport.

We meet our ensemble cast during the Annual Risk Mitigation Parade, where children ride in foam-wrapped wagons while parents hand out laminated data charts on “safety outcomes” and “screen time trauma.”

The town’s elite parenting clique, The Bubble Council, is led by VALERIE DRAPER, a former Wall Street analyst turned “Emotional Hazard Prevention Specialist.” She tracks her twins’ bowel movements on a spreadsheet and once lobbied to ban “imaginary friends” for being emotionally unlicensed.

Her biggest rival is DONNA SHARP, a wellness-obsessed “gentle parenting” influencer with a YouTube channel called Namaste No. Her 7-year-old wears noise-canceling headphones during recess.

Meanwhile, DEREK “DRONE DAD” WILLIAMS, a tech bro turned stay-at-home father, has invented a wearable child-surveillance device called the TattleTag™. It syncs to a Tesla. He monitors recess from a nearby Sprouts parking lot.

And finally, GARY MACKLIN, a well-meaning but confused dad who joined the movement late. He bubble-wraps bananas and thinks “gluten” is a Pokémon.

These four families are all prepping for the National SafeParent Championship, a corporate-sponsored event held at the Peppermint Grove Wellness Dome. The prize? A year’s worth of artisan sunscreen and a feature on the Today Show.

Act II: Helmets, Hand Sanitizer, and Havoc

The event includes “safety-themed” games like:

  • Toddler Tactical Crawling (with knee pads and emotional coaches)

  • Allergen-Free Bake-Off (a single rice cracker, judged for offense potential)

  • Parental Drone Navigation (kids in fields, parents fly drones to guide them to safety)

  • Panic Drill Simulation (parents must identify 47 hypothetical dangers in a Montessori room in under 60 seconds)

Backstage, the competition gets tense. Valerie accuses Donna of microaggressively offering dairy-free cookies. Donna claims Derek’s drone “buzzed” her aura. Gary tries to opt out but accidentally signs up for the “Advanced Fainting Response Workshop.”

Tensions reach a fever pitch when a rogue group of kids (led by Valerie’s rebellious daughter MILLIE) sneaks out of the arena and creates “Danger Park”—a DIY jungle gym made from cardboard, glitter, uncooked spaghetti, and one unlicensed kitten.

Their rally cry? “Let us fall—so we can get up!”

Act III: Emotional Detonation and Parental Awakening

Panic ensues. Parents storm Danger Park, some in tactical vests. A live-streamed conflict erupts: safety vs. freedom. Helicopter parents literally land a news chopper. One dad brings a laminated cease-and-desist letter. Another tries to call OSHA.

But then something unexpected happens: the children are thriving.

Millie delivers an impassioned speech (into a walkie-talkie connected to a toy megaphone):
“We know you love us. But you’re not protecting us. You’re preventing us. From failing. From growing. From becoming not-you.”

A silence falls. Valerie drops her iPad. Donna removes her child’s emotion-regulating poncho. Gary starts crying and unpeels a banana without gloves.

They realize—they’ve been protecting themselves from feeling. From fear. From change.

Epilogue: Dirt, Love, and Free-Range Futures

One year later, Chestnut Hill has changed.

Danger Park is now an official city zone, open for supervised chaos. Valerie teaches a class called “Letting Go 101.” Donna sells “Risk is Growth” shirts in her new Etsy store. Derek reprograms his drones to deliver water balloons instead of anxiety.

And Gary? He starts a podcast called Raising Kids Without Losing Your Damn Mind. His theme song? Just him yelling “Don’t lick that!” into a fan.
